Míngbai is a desktop Chrome extension for learning from Chinese subtitles on supported Netflix and YouTube viewing. It groups subtitle lines into useful phrase chunks and puts pinyin, meanings and learner tools alongside the video.

It is designed mainly for intermediate learners who know some Chinese but find real dialogue too fast for word-by-word lookup. Beginners can still use the pinyin, English and script controls, but Míngbai is a companion to structured study rather than a complete beginner course.

Yes. Míngbai supports Netflix and YouTube on desktop Chrome when a suitable Chinese text subtitle or transcript track is available. Availability can vary by title, subtitle track and platform changes.

Míngbai includes a Simplified/Traditional script control, plus optional pinyin and English subtitles. You can show only the layers that help you and keep the original video in view.

Instead of treating every character as an isolated lookup, Míngbai groups a subtitle into chunks that carry meaning together—such as grammar patterns, verb complements and common expressions. Not by default. Phrase parsing, learner cards, pinyin and compact meanings form the ordinary learning path. Context Explanation and Scene Q&A are separate AI features that run only when you explicitly request them.

Míngbai may process supported subtitle text and limited source information through its hosted services to provide phrase chunks, pinyin and learner cards. Extra context is sent for Context Explanation or Scene Q&A only when you deliberately request one of those features.
